The Shipley School seeks a qualified candidate for the position of High School Modern Language Chair/Spanish teacher. The candidate will have experience in the Modern Language Classroom, hold a degree in a related field and possess a clear educational philosophy, which is consistent with the mission of the school. Experience in curricular leadership roles and teaching Spanish at the high school level is essential.


The Modern Language Chair/Spanish Teacher will:

  • Teach Spanish in the Modern Language Department.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of students.
  • Stay current with National Standards in Modern Language & obtains membership with National Organizations (ACTFL).
  • As Chair, work with the Head of the Division and the Academic Dean to represent the department and to move the department forward.
  • As a teacher and chair, have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and work to create a supportive atmosphere and rigorous academic program in which all students will thrive.
  • Attend monthly US chair meetings & hold regular department meetings.
  • As Chair, support the administration in establishing new academic policies and upholding those in place.
  • As Chair, work with department members on curricular development, scope and sequence and team work.
  • As Chair, oversee the budget, exams, book orders, placement, course selection and content of curricular maps for the department.
  • As Chair, work with the Division Head and Academic Dean on placement and staffing.


The ideal candidate will:

  • Have leadership experience in an independent school setting.
  • Have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Have experience teaching Spanish to Upper School-aged students (Grades 9-12) and command of appropriate L2 strategies.
  • Demonstrate a superior level of proficiency in Spanish.
  • Exhibit excellent speaking and writing skills.
  • Have experience with literature-based instruction to Upper-School aged students.
  • Have experience in immersion-based teaching (100% target language) and appropriate L2 strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to execute lessons using authentic literature, games, and songs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) techniques and engage multiple modalities so that students can retain information.
